Isaac van der Merwe's fundraising recital to save Cape Town's Baxter Concert Hall
Isaac van der Merwe will perform at The Baxter to raise for the venue.
A brilliant young South African pianist has launched an extraordinary artistic mission to secure one of Cape Town’s most cherished cultural landmarks.
Isaac van der Merwe, a multi-award-winning 23-year-old virtuoso, will take to the stage of the Baxter Concert Hall on Friday, 17 July 2026, for a special fundraising recital aimed at securing the independent theatre's future. All proceeds from the evening will go directly towards sustaining the venue’s vital artistic and educational programmes, which have long served as a creative anchor for the city's music community.
The performance marks a poignant homecoming for Van der Merwe, who has recently returned from an intensive European tour through London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna as a beneficiary of Filippo Gorini’s prestigious Sonatas from Seven Cities programme. Currently completing his Honours degree in music performance under Professor François du Toit at the University of Cape Town ,the young pianist’s meteoric rise includes victories at the Johann Vos, Pieter Kooij, and Atterbury national competitions, alongside appearances with the Cape Town and Johannesburg philharmonic orchestras.
By dedicating his immense talent to the venue that shaped his development, Van der Merwe joins a proud tradition of local artists stepping forward to safeguard independent cultural spaces during challenging times.
For Van der Merwe, the cause is deeply personal, representing a vital investment in the next generation of South African musicians. He said the Baxter stage is utterly invaluable to students at the South African College of Music for both examinations and public performances, offering a world-class auditorium and precise acoustics that allow young artists to prepare meaningfully for international careers.
Baxter marketing manager Fahiem Stellenboom expressed immense gratitude for the collaboration, praising the virtuoso’s generosity and reaffirming the theatre's commitment to showcasing the country's finest youth talent.
Audiences can expect a captivating programme designed to showcase the full breadth of Van der Merwe’s artistry, blending the timeless charm of Mozart and the impressionistic soundscape of Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque with the emotional intensity of Berg’s Piano Sonata, Op. 1, and the formidable technical brilliance of Rachmaninoff.
Tickets for the 6:30pm recital are priced at R250 and are available to book now through Webtickets or at Pick n Pay stores.
