Microsoft Launches Budget Surface Models With Reduced 8GB Memory

Microsoft has expanded its hardware lineup by introducing more affordable configurations of the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch. These new models are priced at $849 and $949, respectively, and have appeared on the Microsoft Store without a formal launch event.
To achieve these lower price points, Microsoft reduced the system memory to 8GB of RAM, which is half the 16GB found in previous base configurations. Both devices also feature 256GB of storage and are powered by the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus chipset.
Because of the reduced memory, these specific models do not qualify as Copilot+ PCs, as a minimum of 16GB of RAM is required for that certification. Microsoft clarified that these budget-friendly options are intended as additional choices for consumers rather than replacements for the existing 16GB versions.
Brett Ostrum, the corporate vice president of Surface devices, stated that "customer needs vary by workload, and 8GB configurations give customers another entry point for everyday productivity, browsing, communication, and entertainment."
Industry analysts and reports note that 8GB of RAM can lead to performance issues on Windows devices, such as system stuttering and slower speeds when multitasking or opening numerous browser tabs. This is because the system may be forced to access storage instead of memory when RAM is exhausted.
In response to these concerns, Microsoft indicated it is working to optimize the memory footprint of Windows 11. This includes efforts to reduce the amount of RAM required by features like Windows Widgets and improving how the operating system returns memory when it is no longer in use.
