UK Government Slashes VAT for Family Summer Outings and Children's Meals

The UK government has launched the "Great British Summer Savings" scheme, which reduces VAT from 20% to 5% on a variety of family-friendly activities. The measure takes effect on June 25, 2026, coinciding with the start of summer holidays in Scotland, and will remain in place until September 1, 2026.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves described the initiative as a way to "support families with the little treats in life" during a period of significant cost of living pressures. The temporary tax cut is designed to make family outings more affordable while simultaneously boosting footfall for businesses that rely on summer visitors.
The reduced VAT rate applies to admission tickets for both adults and children at a wide range of attractions. These include theme parks, zoos, museums, circuses, soft play centres, nature reserves, and observation attractions. Additionally, the 5% rate covers children's and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, and exhibitions.
Families will also see savings on dining out, as the tax cut extends to children's menu meals served in restaurants for consumption on the premises. To qualify, these meals must be marketed, priced, and presented specifically as children's meals.
Government estimates suggest that if businesses pass these savings on to consumers, a family of four could save £20 on a theme park visit and £17 at a wildlife park. Children's cinema tickets could be reduced by £1.50, and children's meals could be £2 cheaper.
Beyond the VAT reductions, the government is introducing free local bus travel for children aged five to 15 in England throughout August. This transport perk could save a family with two children up to £27 over the month, though it does not apply in London or devolved nations where travel support is managed locally.
