Bafana Bafana will play in their first-ever Fifa World Cup knockout match when they face Canada at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday night (9pm). It is a high-stakes clash that could ultimately be decided by the finest of details, tactical strategies, and moments of individual brilliance.

Given that both sides are navigating unfamiliar territory at this stage of the competition, key individuals will need to rise to the occasion and carry their nations into the Round of 16. Below, we look at the three key matchups that could decide the tie.

Mbokazi has been one of the standout centre-backs at this World Cup, marshalling Bafana’s defence and reading the game with sheer maturity despite being only 20 years old. His timely tackles and composure have allowed him to consistently outplay opposing strikers.

He will want to return to the US, where he currently plays for the Chicago Fire, with the same dominant approach – if not a better one. However, his work will be cut out for him against the hard-running David. The Canadian forward has a sharp eye for goal, having already netted three times in the group stage, and will look to test Mbokazi with relentless pressing.

After missing Bafana’s historic win over South Korea due to suspension, Mokoena is expected to return against Canada. He will look to bring much-needed stability to the engine room, influencing the game both defensively and offensively through his precise passing and dangerous set-pieces.

Eustáquio, however, will be locked in on the midfield battle. He will be tasked with tracking Mokoena's every move while ensuring he controls the tempo of the game whenever Canada transitions into attack or drops into a defensive shape.

Maseko is currently chasing Shaun Bartlett’s record as the only Bafana player to score more than once at a single World Cup. He is well-poised to achieve that historic feat, provided he delivers another relentless performance filled with the pace, trickery, and clinical edge he showed against South Korea.

However, with Davies set to be fit for this clash after missing out on the group stage, Maseko may have to double his efforts. Davies is incredibly quick on and off the ball and possesses the nippy footwork that makes him one of the deadliest wing-backs in world football.
