ICC Judges File Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over Sanctions

Three judges from the International Criminal Court have initiated legal action against U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, challenges sanctions imposed on the judicial officials last year, with the plaintiffs arguing that the measures are unlawful.
The legal challenge follows a series of unprecedented sanctions issued by the Trump administration targeting members of the Hague-based tribunal. These measures were implemented in retaliation for the court's investigations into alleged war crimes involving U.S. troops in Afghanistan and the issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli officials.
According to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the sanctions were a response to what the administration described as "illegitimate and baseless actions" targeting the United States and its allies. The U.S. government has previously asserted that the ICC is politicized and lacks the authority to prosecute nationals of the U.S. or its close partners.
The sanctions imposed on the judges include the freezing of assets within U.S. jurisdictions and bans on entry into the United States. These restrictions significantly hinder the judges' ability to conduct routine financial transactions, as banks with U.S. ties are generally required to comply with the Treasury Department's restrictions.
The ICC has previously condemned such actions, stating that they represent an attempt to undermine the independence of an international judicial institution. The court maintains that its mandate is supported by 125 States Parties and is essential for providing justice to victims of atrocities.
