UK Businesses Welcome Temporary VAT Cut for Family Summer Activities

The UK government has launched the "Great British Summer Savings" initiative, a temporary tax relief measure designed to make family outings more affordable. From June 25 to September 1, 2026, the VAT rate on a variety of family-friendly services will be reduced from 20% to 5%.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves introduced the scheme to support families with "the little treats in life" during a period of significant cost-of-living pressures. The reduced tax rate applies to children's meals served on-premises in restaurants, as well as children's and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, and exhibitions.
Additionally, the VAT cut extends to admission tickets for both adults and children at a wide range of attractions. Eligible venues include zoos, amusement parks, museums, soft play centres, nature reserves, circuses, and observation attractions. The government expects these measures to lower costs for families, estimating savings of approximately £20 for theme park visits and £17 for wildlife park trips.
Industry representatives have responded positively to the move. UK Hospitality, which represents businesses in the sector, described the VAT reduction as a "positive step" that will help families enjoy their summer breaks while benefiting businesses through increased footfall.
Beyond the VAT cuts, the broader campaign includes free local bus travel for children aged 5 to 15 in England throughout August. The government also announced targeted cuts to import taxes on 100 basic food products to further assist households facing rising energy and food bills.
While the government encourages businesses to pass these tax savings directly to customers, the decision to do so remains at the discretion of the individual companies. The scheme is timed to coincide with the start of the Scottish school holidays and will remain in effect until children return to school in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland on September 1.
