'Dana, please take the job!' - Trump asks UFC boss to be White House press secretary
  • Published7 November 2026
  • US President Donald Trump has asked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) boss Dana White to be White House press secretary, in a social media post.

"Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Dana, please take the job!"

It was unclear whether the president's public job offer was genuine, although White said later on Saturday: "I'm going to meet with him, we have a meeting on Monday".

The vacancy for White House press secretary has been open since mid-October, when Katie Zacharia quit less than five days into the job.

Trump's post on Saturday afternoon comes after his fellow Republicans were routed in the US midterm elections, losing their congressional majorities.

The president called White "a violent Fighter and Warrior" and asked that he bring a number of high-profile UFC fighters with him on the job "even though some are not from our Country".

"We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left," Trump wrote, alongside photos of the six fighters.

Following Trump's post, White posted an Instagram photo of himself behind the lectern in the White House press briefing room.

"On to the next chapter," White wrote, though it was unclear if the post was tongue-in-cheek.

"Hell yeah! Do it, @DanaWhite!" White House communications director Steven Cheung posted on X, as he shared the president's message.

White was ringside for a fight in London on Saturday night between British former world champion Chris Billam-Smith and Jamaican-born Briton Cheavon Clarke at the Copper Box Arena.

Asked about the Trump offer at a news conference afterwards, the UFC chief executive said he was flying to Washington for a meeting with Trump on Monday.

"I got a lot of jobs already," he told reporters.

"I'm sure we'll have something to talk about after that," he added, without being drawn on whether he was interested in taking on one of the most gruelling jobs in the political arena.

CNN cited a source familiar as saying that White had declined the idea.

As he noted in the news conference, he already has a number of time-consuming commitments.

As well as leading UFC and Power Slap, a regulated slap-fighting promotion league, he has just launched Zuffa Boxing, a professional promotion company.

And last year he was unveiled as one of three new board members of Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Famously combative, White has at times clashed with journalists covering the sport during news conferences.

He released a clip in 2020 lambasting reporters who had questioned the UFC's decision to hold fights during the pandemic.

In 2009, he released an expletive-laden video tirade using an anti-gay slur while rebutting a journalist's story about changes to credential rules backstage at UFC events.

White is a longtime ally - and friend - of Trump.

When White and his business partners bought the then-struggling UFC organisation for $2m in 2001, the sport's future seemed uncertain.

Just five years earlier, Republican Senator John McCain had famously labelled mixed martial arts "human cockfighting", sparking bans in 36 US states.

"None of the venues wanted [the UFC]," White said in 2025. "They didn't believe in it. They didn't like it, and they were worried about the type of crowd that would show up for this type of event."

With mainstream arenas shutting them out, White credits Trump with saving the organisation by hosting two UFC events at the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 2001.

White became a speaker for Trump's White House campaigns at the Republican National Conventions in 2016, 2020 and 2024.

He also appeared on stage for Trump's victory speech in the 2024 presidential election.

This summer, the UFC staged a cage match on the White House lawn.
