Protests in Stanger, Isipingo, and Pinetown have led to significant road closures, with community leaders urging residents to stay indoors.
Major transit routes are affected, and authorities are on high alert to manage the situation
Aidan David, chairperson of the eThekwini District Policing Board, said many major transit routes and residential zones have been compromised or closed entirely.
David said the main road from Stanger was heavily blocked with burning tyres at intervals of approximately one kilometer.
“All residents in these specific sectors are strongly urged to remain indoors. SAPS is currently in attendance.
“In Umbumbulu, the R603 is heavily affected and closed to traffic. Motorists should seek alternative routes.
“In Pinetown, there are localised active demonstrations which may cause major traffic delays.
“Authorities are on high alert in Inanda, where there are several protests and road blockages,” David said.
In Isipingo, there were disruptions due to protest action around the old airport.
Affected roads:
Pinetown / New Germany
A protest march is taking place from 10:00 today. The route includes:
* Glenugie Park
* Moodie Street
* Josiah Gumede Road
* Crompton Road
* School Road
* M19
* Shepstone Road
* Pineside Industrial
KwaDukuza / Stanger
* Protest action reported on the R102.
* Nonoti and Doringkop areas are reported to be inaccessible.
* Main roads from Stanger have reportedly been blocked at various points with burning tyres.
* Residents are advised to remain indoors where safe to do so.
* SAPS are on scene.
Springfield / Inanda Road
* Protesters have been seen moving along Inanda Road towards Springfield Industrial.
* Metro Police are in attendance.
Isipingo Old Airport Area
* Reports indicate protesters have blocked the entrance to the area.
David said the Isipingo protest action was not related to the March and March protests, but was due to a work-related issue.
“This is a work-related truckers protest and is unrelated to the issue of foreigners. Staff are disgruntled with the owner of the company. The protest is ongoing and SAPS and Public Order Police are on scene,” he said.
He added while there were multiple protests today, there were contingency plans in place to address it.
“Expect traffic disruptions, road closures, and delays. Motorists are urged to avoid affected routes where possible and follow instructions from law enforcement officials,” David urged.
