Lagos jails 13 for illegal waste disposal

The Lagos State Government has arraigned and secured the conviction of thirteen individuals before a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, for offences relating to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in violation of environmental sanitation laws.
The development was disclosed in a post shared on the official X handle of the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Tuesday.
According to the post, the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.
Following their guilty pleas, the court convicted and sentenced each of them to three months’ imprisonment.
The statement said, “Thirteen individuals were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, for offences relating to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in contravention of environmental sanitation laws.
“The defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them. Following their guilty pleas, the court convicted and sentenced each of them to three (3) months’ imprisonment.
“The convicted persons are: Jamiu Abdulkareem, Nwosu Martin, Abduljamiu Wasiu, Habeeb Muhammed, Kolawole Elijah, Anum Musa, Adeniyi Jamiu, Taiwo Olaniyi, Ali Muhammed, Paul Yaya, Damilare Adebowale, Ojo Fatai and Abah Musa.”
The convictions, according to the state government, underscore its commitment to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining a clean, safe and healthy environment for all residents.
