FIFA Bans Qatar's Assim Madibo After Canada Midfielder's Leg Fracture

The FIFA disciplinary committee has issued a five-match ban to Qatar's Assim Madibo for serious foul play during a World Cup Group B match. The suspension stems from a tackle that caused a severe leg injury to Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné.
The incident occurred in the 51st minute of Canada's 6-0 victory over Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver. Madibo struck Koné from behind, resulting in fractures to both the tibia and fibula in the Canadian player's left leg. While the referee initially issued a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a straight red card following a VAR review.
Koné, a 24-year-old player for the Italian club Sassuolo, was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and underwent surgery that Thursday night. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch noted the severity of the injury, stating that the sound of the bone snapping was audible from the bench. Early estimates suggest Koné may be sidelined for four to five months.
Following the match, Madibo apologized to Koné in person and visited the Canada dressing room. The Qatar Football Association further reported that Madibo and the country's sports minister visited Koné in the hospital to check on his condition.
Despite the apology, the injury cast a shadow over Canada's first World Cup win. Canadian striker Jonathan David expressed frustration over the necessity of the challenge, while teammate Stephen Eustaquio described the red card as a clear decision given the nature of the injury.
FIFA's decision regarding the five-game suspension remains subject to appeal. This ban follows a match that left Qatar struggling for progression in the tournament, while Canada moved closer to the knockout stages.
