Enugu State Launches Advanced DNA Forensic Centre to Combat Crime

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially inaugurated the Center for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CEDFOCI), a state-of-the-art facility located at the main campus of Godfrey Okoye University in Ugwuomu. The center was established through a collaboration between the university and the Enugu State Government to modernize the region's approach to security and justice.
During a high-profile tour of the facility, Governor Mbah reviewed the center's operational readiness. The laboratory is equipped with advanced technologies for precision DNA analysis, forensic investigations, paternity testing, and sequencing. These tools are designed to help law enforcement agencies accurately identify criminals, locate missing persons, and establish family relationships.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu hailed the inauguration as a landmark achievement. He noted that the facility's ability to provide scientific evidence will be critical in addressing national security challenges such as homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, and sexual offenses. The IGP emphasized that the center serves as a strategic national asset that can help exonerate innocent individuals and strengthen the overall administration of justice.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the center as a major milestone in Nigeria's pursuit of innovation-driven development. He stated that the facility aligns with President Bola Tinubu's vision of using technology and intelligence to improve national security and economic growth. Fagbemi added that science-driven law enforcement is a key factor in reducing crime and increasing public confidence in the justice system.
