Senegal's Ibrahim Mbaye becomes youngest African World Cup scorer
Senegal teenager Ibrahim Mbaye etched his name into World Cup history by becoming the youngest African ever to score at the tournament, with a stoppage-time strike against France.
Aged 18 years and 143 days, the Paris Saint-Germain forward broke a record previously held by his compatriot Moussa Wagué, set in 2018. His goal came in the 95th minute of Senegal's 3-1 defeat to France, as he picked up the ball wide on the right, beat his marker with a feint and drilled a finish past goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
The goal placed Mbaye among an elite group of the youngest scorers in World Cup history, a list headed by names such as Pelé. Only a handful of players have ever scored at a younger age on the game's biggest stage.
Mbaye's rise has been rapid. He became PSG's youngest-ever league starter in Ligue 1, and had earlier become one of Senegal's youngest scorers at the Africa Cup of Nations. His emergence has marked him as one of the brightest young talents in the international game.
Though Senegal fell to France in the match, Mbaye's record-breaking moment offered a glimpse of the future for one of African football's most prominent national teams.
