Bafana Bafana record-breaker Siphiwe Tshabalala has furthered his professional development by completing the Fifa Players’ Executive Programme in North America, the site of the ongoing World Cup.
Tshabalala became a global icon in 2010 after scoring the tournament's opening goal on home soil. Since then, he has served in various ambassadorial roles across multiple platforms and organisations, including Fifa.
As part of FIFA's initiatives, he enrolled 14 months ago in the Fifa Players’ Executive Programme, which is designed to equip former players with the expertise needed for post-retirement careers.
On Tuesday night, Tshabalala took to social media to celebrate his graduation, expressing his pride in achieving this significant milestone.
“Proud to announce that I have completed the Fifa Players’ Executive Programme. It’s been a great 14 months of learning at the highest level. We go again,” he posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Tshabalala hopes that Bafana will build on his celebration by defeating South Korea in their final Group A match in Monterrey this Thursday (3am), potentially advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in four tournament appearances.
The team arrived at the tournament with fond memories of the 2010 showpiece, eager to improve upon previous performances. They faced co-host Mexico in the opening game, which served as a rematch of the 2010 tournament opener.
However, their campaign has not gone according to plan. After a 2-0 loss to Mexico and a draw with Czechia, they sit at the bottom of Group A with only one point. They must now defeat South Korea to keep their tournament hopes alive.
