Wissa scores DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal in Portugal draw
Yoane Wissa scored the Democratic Republic of Congo's first goal at any World Cup to secure a 1-1 draw with Portugal, a landmark moment for the central African nation on its return to the tournament.
The 29-year-old Newcastle United forward struck early in the second half, meeting a corner with a header that beat the Portuguese goalkeeper. The goal cancelled out an early opener from Joao Neves, who had put Portugal ahead in the sixth minute, and earned Congo a valuable point.
The result marked a historic milestone for the team, which had never previously scored at a World Cup. For Wissa, the goal carried added significance: five years earlier he had recovered from an acid attack that left him with severe injuries and required emergency surgery.
Congo's draw against one of the tournament favourites was celebrated widely, including in regions of the country grappling with serious challenges. The point offered a rare moment of national joy at a difficult time.
The performance underlined the growing competitiveness of African sides at the expanded 2026 World Cup, where several teams from the continent have produced notable results. Congo will look to build on the platform as the group stage continues.
