Tottenham Pursue Mateus Fernandes After Failed Bid for Sandro Tonali

Tottenham Hotspur are aggressively pursuing West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes as part of an ambitious summer recruitment drive. The move comes after Newcastle United rejected a bid from the North London side for Sandro Tonali, which was worth nearly £80 million.
Tottenham's manager, Roberto De Zerbi, is seeking to strengthen his midfield options. While the club remains interested in Tonali, they have now turned their attention to the 21-year-old Portugal international. Reports indicate that Spurs are prepared to offer as much as £85 million to secure Fernandes' signature.
West Ham have set a starting valuation of £85 million for the midfielder, with some reports suggesting they could demand more than €100 million due to high demand. The Hammers are reportedly open to selling the player to the highest bidder, regardless of the destination, as they manage their financial realities following relegation.
Manchester United has also emerged as a primary competitor in the race for Fernandes. While United previously valued the former Southampton player at approximately £60 million, they may increase their offer to compete with Tottenham's pursuit.
Fabrizio Romano has noted that Tottenham have initiated direct contact with the player's agent, Jorge Mendes, to reach an agreement on personal terms. Some reports suggest Fernandes may prefer to remain in London, which could provide a strategic advantage for Tottenham over Manchester United.
West Ham's current stance is to listen to offers that meet their valuation, though they would prefer to keep the asset as they prepare for a new chapter under manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The outcome now depends on which club provides the most attractive financial proposal to the East London side.
