Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Hits Kyiv Region, Killing at Least 11

A wave of Russian ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles struck the Kyiv region early on Monday, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and dozens of injuries, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack targeted the capital and nearby suburbs, hitting apartment blocks and other civilian structures.
The assault was the second major strike on Kyiv in less than a week, following a larger combined Russian offensive that had killed at least 31 people days earlier. Ukrainian officials reported that the latest barrage included both missiles and drones, with the city’s military administration confirming the casualties on its Telegram channel.
The timing of the attack coincided with the approach of a NATO summit scheduled to open in Turkey, prompting heightened security concerns. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned of a possible escalation hours before the strikes began, a statement that was later echoed by officials in Kyiv.
Within Russia, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is facing increasing criticism, as the Ukrainian military has intensified its own counter‑strikes inside Russian territory. Analysts note that the growing pressure on both sides may be influencing the Kremlin’s strategic calculations.
International reactions have been swift. NATO members are expected to address the escalation at the upcoming summit, while Western leaders have condemned the civilian toll and called for restraint. No official response from the Russian government had been released at the time of reporting.
Humanitarian agencies are mobilising to assist those affected by the attacks, with emergency services attending to the wounded and providing shelter for displaced residents. The full extent of the damage to infrastructure remains under assessment.
