Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Hits Kyiv Region, Killing Dozens

A coordinated attack involving ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles hit Ukraine’s capital and the surrounding Kyiv region early on Monday, resulting in a death toll of at least 11 people and leaving dozens more injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The strike marked the second major assault on Kyiv and its environs within a week, following a similar attack less than seven days earlier. Officials said the missiles and drones struck residential apartment blocks and other civilian structures, causing significant damage in addition to the casualties.
Health officials confirmed that the number of fatalities reported varied between sources, with some outlets citing at least 12 deaths while others noted a minimum of three. All reports agreed that the death count was at least 11, and that the injured numbered in the dozens.
The timing of the offensive coincided with the opening of a NATO summit in Turkey, where alliance leaders are expected to discuss security challenges in Europe, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials highlighted the proximity of the summit as underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Ukrainian military administration head Tymur Tkachenko posted on Telegram that the attack targeted both civilian and strategic locations, emphasizing the strain on Kyiv’s air defence systems. The incident exposed gaps in the city’s ability to intercept the incoming weapons, a point noted by observers monitoring the conflict.
Within Russia, the war in Ukraine has faced increasing criticism, with reports indicating a growing sense among some officials that victory may be elusive. While no official Russian statement has been released regarding the latest strike, the pattern of intensified attacks suggests a continued effort to pressure Ukrainian defenses ahead of the NATO gathering.
